The second Annual Matt's Aklavik Icebreaker will take place on April 10th, hosted by the Inuvik Cycling Club (ICC). The Icebreaker is a 120 kilometre supported group ride for mental health awareness, from Inuvik to the remote community of Aklavik. The course is entirely on the frozen MacKenzie-Delta river ice road network. It is a flat course and very windy. The scenery is beautiful as riders head towards the Richardson Mountain range. Pictures do not do it justice - you have experience it firsthand!

Riders can register by emailing Chris Bruckner directly at: 911chris.bruckner@gmail.com;. Registration is free.

Weather conditions can vary widely in the Arctic - especially in April. Dress for extreme cold, as riders will be exposed to the elements for the majority of the day. Be prepared for wet weather too. Last year the temperature was above freezing and the road started to melt causing tire spray. Riders should bring a change of clothing. Helmets and studded tires are mandatory. Snacks, technical support, and transportation back from Aklavik afterward will be provided, but riders are encouraged to try to be as independent as possible.

Prior to departure, mental health professionals from various community organizations will talk about mental illness and highlight available resources for those in need. The event is named after former ICC member Matt Hamilton, who originally conceived the idea of organizing a group ride to Aklavik. Tragically, Matt died in February of 2021.
